It has taken us over a decade to launch our own business and there are a few factors in this, the main one being we couldn’t decide what we wanted to do.
I truly believe everything happens for a reason and the reason why we didn’t drop our careers 10 years ago and go into business together was that it wouldn’t have been the right time in life and we wouldn’t have come up with our final idea. We did buy our Twinkledust domain over 10 years ago though as it was a name that stuck in our heads and we both loved but throughout that time we had many ideas but none of them suited Twinkledust or us. When I left 6th form college I spent that summer with recruitment agencies up in London trying to get a job in the finance world. I had left college with an A-Level in Textiles and Graphic Design and AS in Business Studies and Business Law. None of which would help me in my job quest. I was very determined and eventually got a break with a job at a Commodity Brokers. 15 years later I left the city on Maternity leave never to return!
My job was really a full-time one, I could have gone back to do something else in my company part-time but I didn’t want to, in fact, I really didn’t want to commute to London at all! Having Alicia meant all my perspectives changed and I was fortunate to be in a position where I had a little bit of time to decide what I wanted to do. Emma had already had Oliver 9 months before I had Alicia and she was returning to work on a 3-day-in-London position and 1 day working from home. That was supertough for her as if her nights weren’t sleepless enough, 3 days a week she gets up at 4.30am to sort everything out for the kiddies before she catches a 5.50am train. I really admire her! 9 months after Alicia was born little Imogen came along for Emma, then 12 months later finally Ella came along for me! It was then we stumbled across what we wanted to make Twinkledust into and we were both ready for it!
Emma still works in London 3 days a week at the moment and not only does she have two little tots to sort out she has Twinkledust too but we both enjoy it! It is something we have done all by ourselves and it’s amazing what we have achieved! We are very lucky to get the chance to go into business together because we work well together, we have different qualities that gel together and we know we will make it a success because we both have a genuine work ethic and understand and listen to each other. It has taken us a year to get to our launch date, in this year we have met some amazing people that have helped us along our way on this journey, and what a journey it has been. We have learnt so much about this business before we have actually launched and we have taken some chances along the way but fingers crossed they will turn out ok, only time will tell but I have to say not returning to London was one of the best decisions I have made.
